Week 39 — A free audit tool went live, and a care plan we never set up

A client was billed a full year for website care. This week I found out it had never been switched on.

A client was billed a full year for website care. This week I found out it had never been switched on.

Every Sunday I post my week here: what got built, what broke, and what you can take from it. Pictures first. Two minutes. Scroll.

Built this week — and what it does

One tool for business owners, one clean-up for readers.

1 · A one-minute check of what buyers see when they Google you

The free audit page

Tap to try it on your own business.

Type your business name. It runs seven live checks on your Google listing and website, then shows what's broken and what to fix first.

Before
An audit meant a call with me and a few days of waiting.
Now
One minute, free, no sign-up. Two rounds of checks before launch.
Measuring
Checks run and enquiries that follow, counted from 20 Sep.

For you: run it on your own business before a customer does. Check my score →

2 · Checking SabahGuide against the government’s own documents

230 official sourcesplans, budgets, laws 59 pages checkedline by line 16 disagreedflagged to fix

SabahGuide writes about state plans: water, power, roads. People quote those pages. So I listed every official source and checked each page against them.

Before
Pages written from news reports, never checked against the source.
Now
A list of 230 official sources. 16 pages found saying something different.
Measuring
Pages corrected out of 16. Started 25 Sep.

For you: pick the one number your business quotes most (a price, a year, a count) and check it against where it came from.

What broke, and how I fixed it

Paid 12 months No backups no security
Care plan never switched on
BrokeA client was billed a year of website care by Bingo. Backups and security were never set up. My mistake.
FixSet it all up the same day, and started checking every other care client the same way.
Do thisPaying someone to look after your site? Ask for the date of the last backup.
old contractor's login just the owner
A scam message, and a forgotten login
BrokeA clinic reported a scam WhatsApp using their name. Was their website hacked?
FixThe site was clean. But an old contractor still had admin access, so I removed it.
Do thisList everyone who can log in to your website. Remove anyone who left.
22h office blocked
Locked out of my own office
BrokeI checked 27 client sites in one go. The host thought it was an attack and blocked our office internet for 22 hours.
FixThe block lifted after about 22 hours. Big checks now go in small batches.

Still working on

No sale closed. Proposals went out, nobody signed yet.

Three calls to solar firms, not made. The list is ready. The calls aren't.

Two LinkedIn posts, not three. Content slipped off my to-do list again.

  • For clients: a state agency's new site got its final fixes and is ready to go live; a supply base's site now works in English and Malay on the test site.
  • For more clients: an event site's guest list synced, a clinic group's site fixed for tablets, and 27 sites updated safely.
  • For new business: sent a proposal, met two possible clients, and listed every solar firm in Sabah.
  • For SabahGuide: the newsletter now goes out with a one-page check before sending.
  • For the team: handed the AI receptionist's first customer to my team member.
  • For the long game: two LinkedIn posts, and my wife's new shop plan checked four times.

Other tools this week: Google Ads, Zoho Books, SiteGround, MainWP, Cloudflare, Google Search Console.

If you do one thing this week

Ask whoever looks after your website: "When was my last backup? Can you show me?"

A date and a screenshot is a good answer. "Don't worry, it's handled" is not. I found one of mine wasn't.

That’s my week. How was yours? Tell me on LinkedIn or in the comments on Substack. Next one lands next Sunday.
